Even if you aren’t enough of a porn fan to notice which company makes the movies you watch, chances are you’ve heard of Vivid Entertainment. The studio makes high-end porn and its contract stars, known as Vivid Girls, are some of the most beautiful women in the industry. A list of Vivid Girls past and present includes some big names: original Vivid Girl Ginger Lynn, naturally busty Christy Canyon, the world-famous Jenna Jameson, brainy Japanese-American beauty Asia Carrera, Bloodhound Gang muse Chasey Lain, mocha-skinned sexual athlete Heather Hunter, classically beautiful brunette Racquel Darrian, half-Thai beauty Tera Patrick, and Indian-Canadian babe Sunny Leone. Newbie Vivid Girls include NYC party girl Capri Anderson and ex-preacher’s wife Allie Haze.
Studio co-owner Steven Hirsch had a vision for the adult industry when he founded Vivid in 1984. At the time, women were not typically seen as porn consumers. Hirsch wanted to make movies for straight couples, or even for women to get off to on their own. Vivid has always emphasized quality over quantity and it doesn’t mind spending cash on marketing.
A big part of Vivid’s success is Paul Thomas, who made hundreds of movies at the company for nearly 25 years until he left in 2009, helming ’80s classics (“Army Brat”), huge ’90s hits (“Jenna Jameson is the Masseuse”), and more recent taboo-breaking interracial features (“Janine’s Been Blackmaled”). One of P.T.’s last major Vivid releases was “Throat: A Cautionary Tale,” a dark re-imagining of the iconic “Deep Throat” with Sasha Grey doing some of her best work in the leading role. Photographer turned contract director B. Skow has been behind the lens for most of the company’s movies since 2005. Other directors that have been associated with Vivid over the years include legendary drag queen/director Chi Chi LaRue, alt-porn trailblazer Eon McKai, and porn parody maestro Axel Braun.
Braun’s “Batman XXX: A Porn Parody” was released to DVD in 2010 and became the year’s best-selling, most award-winning title, thanks in large part to incredible casting. Comeback king Dale DaBone is Batman. Beautiful Tori Black makes a sexy Catwoman. Adorable Lexi Belle is the world’s cutest Batgirl. Sultry Alexis Texas is a seductress out to capture Batman. The hilarious Evan Stone is the Riddler. Young porno ladies’ man James Deen is Robin. The rest of the cast is equally impressive. The movie’s success inspired a new sub-studio, Vivid SuperXXXHeroes. Axel Braun has recently wrapped filming on “Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody,” shot in 3D and sure to be another must-see SuperXXXHeroes release.

Steven Hirsch famously offers film deals to such famous names as Pippa Middleton and Charlie Sheen. As unlikely as it is that England’s latest It Girl or even party boy Sheen would take Hirsch up on his offers, they kept Vivid’s name popping up in the news – and you can’t blame the guy for trying. Who wouldn’t want to see that almost-royal ass naked?Vivid did get former Hillary Clinton intern-turned-porn starlet Sammie Spades to film a parody titled “Sammie Spades is the Backdoor Intern.”
